Message from the President

Chamber Members:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all 2010 board and special events committee members for their hard work and congratulate them for their successful year.

Little did I know accepting a position on the board of directors would immediately lead to a promotion as President without attending my first board meeting. I wish my whole career would have been like that....hahaha.

I appreciate all the support and confi-dence given to me and I am looking forward to the challenge of growing our local business world.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Marcel Flukiger, co-owner of Aspen Peak Cellars in Conifer, along with my wife Julie. We started our business in the beginning of 2009, a combination of a Micro-Winery/Bistro/ B&B. We both are trained chefs and made wine as a hobby for several years before we decided to start up our new venture in just about the worst economic times the country has faced in decades. Well, here we are a couple of years later, still very excited and proud of our achievement. Most of all we are grateful for all the local business connections as well as the countless personal

friendships that have been created. We can say without a doubt that the 285 corridor has been a great place to work and live during our last 14 years and are hopeful to many more, as we are currently residing in Shawnee, with our 12 year old daughter Chantel.
I will try my best to help grow the Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce, including promoting our businesses in our spread out neighborhoods as well as increasing stops from out of town visitors from the busy Highway.

Don't forget, the stretch of 285 from Pine Junction to Bailey, the Canyon, Historic Shawnee, Grant and Kenosha Pass provides tons of scenic memories to anyone visiting from the Denver Metro Area. Now it is up to us making them stop and show them what we are all about in the Foothills.

Highlighting Local Business


Camp Id-Ra-Ha-Je is a non-denominational Christian camp that has been a part of the Bailey community for 63 years. We are open year-round and offer three distinct programs throughout the year. These programs serve kids, families, church groups and schools.
The summer program provides many adventurous activities such as; horse rides, ropes courses, rock climbing, chapel services, campfires and much more for campers ranging in age from 1st through 12th grade. Id-Ra-Ha-Je is unique in the fact that all ages of kids can come to Camp each week so that mom and dad can bring all of their children to Camp and have a week to themselves.
Our weekend retreat group options provide four different facilities to choose from for different church groups to have a retreat. Many of our adventure activities are available for these groups as well, to give them a well rounded experience. Our 262 acres is the perfect place for your group to hike, reconnect and have fun.

We also provide an outdoor education program called "The Mountain Lab School". This program has been offering outdoor education classes since 1983. We have over 50 Christian, public and private schools who join us each year. Camp's talented staff teach the students various hands-on courses in the areas of adventure, nature, history and team building.

Our 20+ full-time staff are proud to be a part of the Bailey community for all of these years. We are here to serve Bailey and Colorado. We hope to invest into the lives of children and families to help them grow and learn. Artisans Trail 285

Gary Nichols of Park County Tuorism is writing the steps grant today. He is including the CCPC as a cooperating organization as well as the two Chamber of Commerces. Starfishads.com will do the graphics and branding. Gary is contacting a webmaster.
The artisans trail will have a budget of $3000 plus what participants will pay.

The artisans trail will be published in a brochure, map or booklet format as well as in an on-line website.

The Artisans Trail 285 will be a published list of open artist studios, art galleries, performance venues, special events, pleine aire locations, cultural attractions, tourist amenities and accommodations. This published list and map will be made available to a regional audience coming to the 11 entry points of Colorado to encourage tourists to visit Park County. The promotion is year round and provides a tool to aid tourists in their search for arts experiences along 285.

We have at least seven art galleries to participate, three artist open studios so far, six performance venues, seven festival events to list, 25 tourist amenity entities. We will need more artist studios. Each venue may display the branding logo or device to identify its authenticity and availability.

Each entity is named, described, located with directions and contact info, and a schedule listed for appearance or availability. One could be open every day, once a week, every weekend, once a month, two weekends a year, only by appointment.... Whatever suits the venue.

Each venue would be visited by the public and tourists so each venue would prepare to receive visitors, care for them, and sell to them. Experience in relating to customers will be helpful.

Membership Renewal

t is that time of year! It is time to renew your membership with the Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce. Membership renewal invoices have been emailed to the businesses whose membership is set to expire in January and February 2011. There will also be membership applications available at the General Breakfast for your to pick up and complete.

Park County Planning Meeting

On Tuesday, Febraury 8th at 9:00 am in Fairplay the Park County Board of Adjustments/ Planning Commission Meeting will be held. On this months agenda is the proposed changes to Article V Land Use Regulations for all of Park County. The newly proposed Article V is available online on our website at www.bailey-colorado.org choose Proposed Changes to Article V Land Use Regulations on the left hand side. This link will take you directly to the revised document. The meeting will be held at 501 Main Street, Annex Building, BCOCC Conference Room, Fairplay, CO 80440.

Boys and Girls Club

Dear Business Owner,

With the goal of reopening the Bailey site of the Boys and Girls Club (The Club), the Advisory Board is looking to the businesscommunity for support. The Club is a valuable resource for our most valuable community resource--our kids. This Club is the most positive opportunity we have in our rural, mountain community to offer our youth—and we need your help to make this happen.

The Club is a safe, supervised place for the kids (from both the Platte Canyon area and mountain JeffCo) that offers programs to
help them reach their potential. A place for them to be after school and during breaks. An option other than being home alone.
When it was open in 2009, 230 children benefitted from having this important service. With increased awareness, that number will
grow. What a great opportunity for your business to truly make a difference in the lives of our kids, for our future!
There are several easy ways to show your support:

Donate items and/or services for the Kenosha Auction held on February 12th.
We are allowed twenty lots, (items to bid on,) and are looking for “Nice-ities and Necessities”.
(“Necessities” that we need up in the mountains- septic pumping, propane, windshield repair/replacement
come to mind.) Come attend the Auction!! It is great business exposure—especially with your item there.

Pizza! Pizza! We are currently selling Little Caesars’ Pizza Kits! This is a tasty, convenient and economical way to support the Club. Crazy Breads and Cookie Dough Kits are also offered and the Club earns $5 for every kit sold. If you would like to order Kits or help with sales, please contact us.

Cartons for Kids Campaign Quart sized cartons that can fit in less than 3 inches square of counter space are great opportunities to create awareness as well as show your support while your customers fill them with their spare change.

Matching Donations Would you be willing to get your employees involved? How about offering to match whatever they donate? ALL donatios will help the Club receive a matching grant of $10,000 from corporate Boys & Girls Club if we raise $20,000 by February 28th!
