March 2011

Message from the President

Chamber Members:

March Madness is upon us and I would like to use this time of the year to position us for the upcoming spring, summer and fall season. Getting our community out of hibernation status can take quite a while, however it won't be long until the highway is providing us with another multi-month RV and boat show.

The board and its committees are working hard on presenting our Canyon to this crowd with some exciting events to attend, businesses to explore, things to do and places to stay.

Even though the national economists are not exactly giving us a straight up arrow outlook this year, I truly believe in micro-markets like our mountain community. If we concentrate on our personal goals, work together on a bigger scale and help those in need, there is no doubt in my mind that we are positioning ourselves for a brighter future.

With that said, I urge all of you to participate in any special events or Chamber sub-committees. Your expertise and input is very welcome and will be greatly appreciated.

Have a lucrative month.

Highlighting Local Business

Luna’s Mandala is a Unique Gift and Clothing Shop Inspired by Nature. It is lo-cated in the Aspen Park Village Center (the two story building just west of the Conifer King Soopers), upstairs (B-208). Luna’s Mandala carries items that you won’t find anywhere else, so if you are looking for the perfect unique gift for someone who has everything, this is the place to come! Luna’s prides itself on supporting local artists (we have such amazing talent up this corridor!) From Aspen Wall Art, to Watercolor, to Collage Wall art, to Kaliedescopes, to Jewelry….the array is amazing! We also carry a wide range of mineral and crystals as well as artistic fossil specimans (in plaques and bowls!) We have salt candle holders and lamps (prices anywhere from $10 – $150). There are amazing wood carvings…my favorite is the soaring Eagle!

The shop recently expanded into carrying a wide-range of organic clothing…from T-Shirts (both men and women) that are 100% Organic Cotton ~ to stylish clothing (tops, pants, skirts, camis and socks) made from Bamboo and Hemp. As often as possible we try to bring in items that are earth-friendly ~ whether it be fair-trade, recycled, local or organic…be sure and check out my feature on my website as it explains all the great benefits of GOING GREEN! For instance, Bamboo clothing is a natural wicker – keeps you warmer in winter and cooler in the summer! It also naturally blocks over 90% of UV rays…Wow! Bamboo items at the shop start at $10.50 and can go up to $70 – but as you can see this product is amazing!!!)

Luna’s Mandala is open Wednesday through Friday 11-5 and Saturday 10-4 (or by appointment). Be sure and stop by…not only are you supporting a locally owned business, you are supporting local artists and helping to change the world!

Firness Tip

50 and Over Fitness

Fifty is a typical age where one gets all the ribbing about how they are going downhill.

Sure, things are getting harder to do, tie your shoes, walk up stairs, take out the garbage, get in and out of your car, etc., etc.
It doesn’t have to be this way.

These Activities of Daily Living can be turned into no brainers. Just like they used to be.

A change of attitude is the first thing you want to do.

Tell yourself to look forward to doing these things. As you do them more and more, they will be easier. Next, add a few exercises throughout the day. A couple of squats just before you walk up the stairs or while picking up the laundry basket.

A few pushups against your wall, while standing, a good starter one for many.

Sit down in your chair and then stand back up, doing this several times.

You get the idea.

Life’s movements can be much easier, if you help yourself out a little. You’ll be glad you did.

Other ideas would be to join a group class or form one of your own. Hire a Personal Trainer for yourself or your group. Get some exercise videos and do what you can.

But always, be safe.

Please join us for a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration and our first mixer for 2011, March 17 at Rustic Station Restaurant in Bailey, 5-8pm. The $5.00 per person cover charge includes a bowl of Tom’s great soup and a fresh salad, beverage and food taxes and gratuity not included. He is promising corned beef and cabbage (yum) and other Irish dishes that I can’t say nor spell, but sound hearty, delicious and filling. So if soup and salad doesn’t sound like enough food during blustery March, you will be able to order off the full dinner menu. Come out and support a local business, meet new and old friends, and have a green beer at the cash bar. The Chamber is also using this opportunity to spotlight Chances Scholarship, a locally supported program for graduates of Platte Canyon High School. There will be a silent auction with many donated items from the community and businesses. Heather Howard, Mary Sasser and Linda Henley are rounding up the donations, should be an interesting mix. If education is important to you, and you realize its value and importance in this global economy, consider donating to this cause. 100% of the proceeds go towards scholarship to students who are planning on attending a University, College or Vocational school. Hope to see you there!

For more information and to make donations, contact: Heather Howard 303-838-1819 or Linda Henley 303-838-2644
